What is the Sports Performance Institute

The Sports Performance Institute at Life West is a unique place where all athletes can find exciting new ways to optimize their health and abilities, to strengthen their performance and to maximize their ability to heal.

The number one thing we will focus on is your nervous system and its ability to control the coordination of your body.
The nervous system is responsible for the communication and functionality of your entire body. Your muscles, tendons, proprioceptors and joints all work together constantly and know where your body is in space at all times. When this coordination is optimal you are coordinated and your body is naturally able to work through rapid changes within the environment without slowing or injury.

That coordination is the key to performance and the key to recovery from injury.

Some athletes come to the SPI after sustaining an injury. Our professional team uses highly effective techniques to speed up recovery times and even more importantly to help you have a sustainable recovery. We find the root causes of injury and help you to heal in a way that will not have you injuring the same area again and again.

We also work with many athletes who have no injuries but see improved performance, improved coordination and improved endurance after being evaluated and adjusted by a chiropractor.

How do Chiropractors Help Athletes?

Chiropractors assess your spine and other joints for functional relationships between the joint alignment, the nervous system and the proprioceptive system. We look for areas where bones are not precisely aligned and restore functional integrity. We also look for areas where the nervous system is impeded by a misaligned joint and we evaluate and work to restore nervous system communication.

All of this is accomplished through safe and gentle chiropractic adjustments.

Meet Dr. Drake

Dr. Sean Drake’s athletic career was cut short by a car accident. He tried everything to get back into competitive form. Only his discovery of chiropractic allowed him to access his ability to heal and to perform again.

That experience led Sean to a career in chiropractic and a passion for performance. In the past five years, since graduating Life University, Sean has worked with countless athletes, from professionals to kids, and he has seen over and over the incredible impact of the chiropractic adjustment. “Removing subluxation and letting the body restore function is the key to it all”, says Sean. In a world full of sports chiropractors, Sean does his work with a distinction. Sean focuses on the subluxation above all other protocols.

Sean has many letters after his name, including CCSP, CCEP and a Masters in Sports Health Science, but he reveres his chiropractic degree most. It is his passion for education and talent for communication that has led to success in private practice and many opportunities to adjust elite athletes.

Today he is the Director of the Life West Sport Performance Institute. Sean is working with students in the health center, working with campus athletes to keep them in peak performance mode, and working with the enrollment team to recruit young chiropractors interested in a unique take on sports and chiropractic. He is a popular figure at Champions Weekends and around campus, as he leads a new generation of sports chiropractors into a vitalistic model.
